Lions kick off Currie Cup with Leopards victory

The Lions got their Currie Cup campaign off to a winning start in the Royal Bafokeng Stadium in Phokeng on Friday night by beating the Leopards 43-13.

Two tries by Lions scrumhalf Jano Vermaak were the bullets that gunned the Leopards down in an uninspiring match. Those tries, their discipline and their goal-kicking helped cull the Leopards.

The combination of referee Lourens van der Merwe and Lions flyhalf Herkie Kruger helped sink the Leopards.

The first half didn’t produce anything to write home about and it would probably be best remembered for the sounds of the vuvuzelas.

Springbok centre Waylon Murray kick-started the Lions’ score in the second half when he ran in unopposed and Vermaak soon followed with a replay of his first try.

Tries by winger Deon Scholtz and captain Palm Koch got the Leopards into double figures but based on this performance they are in for a long season.

Baby Bok Jaco Taute scored a try into injury time to make it a comfortable Lions victory.
