Scotsman Murray joins French club Castres

Scotland lock Scott Murray has signed a one-year deal with Castres, the French first division side announced.

The 34-year-old had been out of contract since his previous club Montauban were relegated from the Top 14 in May. His contract at Castres includes the option of a second year.

The Scotsman “is coming to reinforce the Castres pack which this season must build on the solidity and consistency that it showed in 2009-10”, said a statement on the club website.

Murray, who has also played for Edinburgh and Saracens, was capped 87 times by Scotland between 1997 and 2007, captaining the side on three occasions.

Castres, who finished fifth last season in France’s Top 14, begin this year’s domestic campaign against newly-promoted La Rochelle on August 14. Castres will also be playing in the European Cup.
