Leeds hungry for more Premiership action

Leeds Carnegie captain Marco Wentzel is backing his side to build on the achievement of retaining their place in the Premiership in the new campaign.

Having led the Yorkshire side to tenth place in the Premiership last season, Wentzel then jetted home to South Africa to sit exams for his law degree, even missing the club’s end of season celebrations.

“Now he believes the squad can build on last year’s record and pass their next big test.

He commented, “It is good to see the boys back in pre-season training this week. We have got a few new players here and there are more to come back in the coming weeks.

“The atmosphere is really good and everyone is looking forward to putting the hard work in over the summer to make sure we are ready for the new campaign.

“We have strengthened our pack from last season and that will be important. The Premiership gets tougher each season and we need to improve on what we did last season. We are excited about that challenge and looking forward to it,” added Wentzel.

The second row has undergone an operation in the close season but says he is pleased with how things have gone, “The operation was a big success.

“The surgeon is happy with how the shoulder is healing and I am confident I will get a couple of games in pre-season and be ready for the start of the season.

“The fitness guys are working me hard on the bike and hopefully I will be out on the field running in the next week so I am not missing much pre-season because of the operation.”
