Merabet settles with Toulon in Top 14

Flanker Mehdi Merabet has signed a one-year contract with an option of a further year at Toulon, the Top 14 side’s president Mourad Boudjellal announced on Tuesday.

The 24-year-old was released by Racing-Metro at the end of last season and originally agreed to join Montauban, only for the move to fall through when his prospective employers were relegated owing to financial difficulties.

Merabet spent four years playing for Toulon’s youth teams between 2004 and 2008, before joining Parisian side Racing-Metro.

“He was trained at Toulon, he has progressed a lot at Racing-Metro and he will continue to do so at Toulon, where he has left good memories,” Boudjellal told AFP.

Merabet will compete for a starting place next season with New Zealand international Carl Hayman, Georgia’s Davit Kubriashvili and French youngster Damien Tussac.

On Monday, European Challenge Cup finalists Toulon announced that New Zealand international wing Rudi Wulf, 26, was joining the club on a two-year contract.
