Reds reveal their teenage genies

Another of Queensland Rugby’s “young guns” – 19-year-old scrum-half Will Genia – will wear the number nine jersey for the Reds for the first time when they face the Western Force in a Super 14 Round Seven match in Perth on Friday.

The Papua New Guinea-born Genia, who has yet to play a grade game for his Brisbane club GPS, has been named in the starting side for the Reds ahead of Nic Berry, who is on the bench.

The Reds will field a “Generation Y” pairing in the halfbacks – Genia at scrum-half and 18-year-old Quade Cooper at fly-half.

Coach Eddie Jones is looking to them to spark some attacking raids.

“Nic [Berry] has played well for us, but we felt Will [Genia] might be a little bit sharper around the rucks,” Jones said after announcing the team on Thursday.

“Will has done well when he’s come off the bench and we thought he might add a little bit more spark to our attack.”

With Berrick Barnes out injured, Wallaby inside centre Lloyd Johansson gets a chance to cement his place back in the run-on side.

In the forwards, former Hurricanes and Chiefs prop Tama Tuirirangi makes his Reds debut after being drafted into the squad to restore the Reds depleted front row stocks.
