Gerrard to join Melbourne Rebels in Super15

The Melbourne Rebels will add former Wallabies fullback Mark Gerrard to their playing roster and are poised to grab another international prop in Rodney Blake.

Gerrard’s management have confirmed to The Australian that the former Brumbies and Waratahs utility, who played 23 Tests between 2005 and the 2007 World Cup, would sign with the Rebels for what will be his 10th season of Super rugby.

The 28-year-old arguably was the form fullback in Super 14 last year left Australia to play for Japanese club NTT Communications when he did not think he would make up part of Wallabies coach Robbie Deans’ international squad.

In the past year Australia have unearthed a new breed of young fullbacks while Julian Huxley has completed his comeback from a brain tumour.

Gerrard has however not been put off by the competition for places and hopes to shine enough for the Rebels in the 2011 Super 15 enough to win a place in the Wallabies world cup squad next year.

His 2007 cup campaign lasted only seconds before he suffered a devastating knee injury.

Former Reds star tighthead prop Rodney Blake otherwise known as “Rodzilla” has been based in Bayonne after he failed to make the Wallabies squad.

He is said to have gone from a weight of 125kg to 135kg but if he is anything like his former Reds teammate Leroy Houston he could shed a lot of weight in the off season ahead of the Super 15.
