Gomez commits to Leeds Carnegie for two years

Leeds Carnegie crowd favourite Juan Gomez has committed himself to the Yorkshire club for a further two years after agreeing a new contract with the club.

Gomez, who last week was called into the full Argentina squad for the forthcoming Tests against France and Scotland, was out of contract this summer and Leeds Carnegie faced fierce competition from a number of clubs’ to retain their tight head prop. However, the former Leinster front rower has now committed to Leeds until at least the end of the 2011-12 season.

Commenting on the new deal, Head Coach Neil Back said, “We are delighted that Juan has agreed a new contract. Juan enjoys our environment here at Leeds Carnegie and thrives on the competitive nature of our squad.

“He is beginning to flourish on the back of consistent performances which has led to him being selected for the full Argentina Test squad.

“I think it is important to say that Juan is still developing and he knows where he needs to improve his game. Having said that, the corner stone of your pack is your tight head prop and that gives you a platform on which you can build your game. Juan has done that exceptionally well for us this year in tandem with Phil Swainston off the bench,” added Back.

Reflecting on his new deal, Gomez, 26, commented, “I have really enjoyed my time at Leeds so far and I am very much looking forward to the next two seasons at Headingley Carnegie.

“This season has been fantastic for the team and we have achieved our goals. The coaching staff showed great belief in the squad and we were able to fulfil that. Hopefully the club can now go on from here and be even stronger in the future.”
