Injury forces Richards into retirement

Peter Richards, the London Irish and England scrum half, has been forced to retire from the game due to injury after a distinguished career.

A back injury limited the 32-year-old’s appearances for the Exiles to 16 this season and he has not played since early February. He will retire on specialist medical advice with immediate effect.

In two spells with London Irish, Peter made 86 appearances and scored ten tries for the club. He also played for Gloucester, London Wasps, Treviso, Bristol and Harlequins, appearing in a total of 151 premiership games and scoring 21 tries.

He played in 50 European games scoring 15 tires which included winning the Heineken cup with Wasps and the European Challenge Cup with Gloucester.

A feisty, aggressive and dynamic player, Peter played for England at every level from Under 16 upwards. He excelled for two seasons with the England Sevens squad, winning the Hong Kong Sevens in 2004.

Richards made his senior international debut against Australia in 2006 and has since been awarded a further 12 caps, the most recent against New Zealand in 2008. He was part of the 2007 World Cup Squad, playing in every game, including in final as a replacement flanker for Joe Worsley!

Commenting on his decision to retire Peter said: “I’ve had a great career and thoroughly enjoyed my rugby wherever I’ve played. I would like to have continued on for another couple of seasons, unfortunately that is not going to be physically possible.

“I would like to thank all the players, coaches and management and supporters at all the clubs I’ve played with for their help, friendship and encouragement.”
