Abram answers Reds’ SOS

Young Reds forward Geoff Abram will join the Queensland franchise’s Super 14 squad in Perth on Wednesday after reserve forward AJ Gilbert was injured in training.

Back row forward Gilbert suffered a shoulder injury at the team’s afternoon training run, after arriving in Perth on Tuesday to prepare for Friday’s Super 14 match against the Western Force.

He will undergo further examination on Wednesday to determine the extent of the injury.

The 20-year-old Abram, who can play at hooker or in the backrow, has represented Australia at Under-19 and Under-21 level, but has yet to make his debut for the Reds.

The Reds will train twice on Wednesday as they try to salvage their season.

They are last on the standings, losing their last five matches – despite a promising start to the season in which they beat the Hurricanes in the opening week.
