Stormers now face must-win Bulls match

The four finalists in the Super 14 competition were as expected finalised in the first two matches on Friday when the Crusaders and the Waratahs, both playing at home, were rampant in convincing wins over the Brumbies and Hurricanes respectively.

The Crusaders won as did the Waratahs and both the winners were impressive in their last outing of the season.

The Crusaders’ comprehensively outplayed a very good Brumbies side to march into the play-offs for the ninth successive year.

The Waratahs are in their fourth semifinal in six seasons and won all their matches in Sydney this year.

Friday’s two wins mean that the Stormers have no option but to win their match against the Bulls at Newlands on Saturday night to ensure that they have a home semifinal.

A draw in either or both of Friday’s matches could have changed their fortunes. The Stormers/Bulls clash is the very last match in this year’s round competition.

A Stormers loss to the Bulls is regarded as highly unlikely by most.

However, should that happen, the Stormers (39 log points with the Bulls match to play) will remain behind the Waratahs (43) and the Crusaders (42) on the log.

Should the Stormers win without a bonus point (they would go to 43), they will advance by virtue of a vastly superior points difference over the Waratahs who are also on 43.

The result of Saturday night’s match will also determine which teams will play one another.

All that is certain at this stage is that the Bulls are at home and will play at the Orlando Stadium with Loftus Versfeld not being available due to the World Cup.
