Sale Sharks sign Newcastle Falcons Fly Half

Sale Sharks have announced the signing of 20 year old goal kicking Fly Half/Centre Rob Miller from Newcastle Falcons.

Capped by England at U16 and U18 Level, Carlisle born Rob helped England U20’s to the Grand Final of the IRB U20’s World Cup in Wales.

Rob also played in the U20’s World Cup in Japan in 2009 alongside Carl Fearns and James Gaskell.

Rob’s first club was Aspatria who Steve Hanley represented before he joined Sale Sharks. Rob has played in 14 of Newcastle’s games so far this season, kicking 5 conversions and 7 penalties.

Sharks Director of Rugby Kingsley Jones said, ” Rob signing for us is excellent news for the club. He hails from Cumbria and has been a regular in the Falcons matchday 23 this season.

“He was man of the match in Falcons game against Leicester Tigers earlier in the season. Rob will be a great understudy to Charlie Hodgson. He has all the skills we need, is a great defender and an excellent goal kicker. He has signed a three year deal with us.”

Newcastle Falcons Director of rugby, Steve Bates, said: “We would like to thank Rob for his contribution to the club, and wish him well for the future at Sale.

“With Jimmy Gopperth being the top points scorer in both the Guinness Premiership and the Amlin Challenge Cup competitions Rob has unfortunately not found regular game time easy to come by.

“But even despite his departure our fly half stocks remain well catered for with the continued emergence of Tom Catterick from our academy.

“Tom has been involved with England Under-20s this season as well as making his first team debut, and with the rapid progress he has shown so far we have every confidence that he is more than capable of making the step up.”

As his side continues its summer recruitment plans, Bates added: “We have identified targets to add to the squad for next season, and are in talks with a number of players about joining the club.

“In addition we already have the majority of our talented players under contract for the coming campaign, as we look to build on our solid foundations here at Kingston Park.”
