Lions hammered by Blues

This was a live match report. Report to follow.

This is a battle between two of the form sides of the moment. The Lions have been all heart, while the Blues are just about the only side playing an attractive brand of rugby at the moment, and it is the clash of those two attributes that will make this fixture so intriguing.

The Lions had a dire start letting in two tries in six minutes. The Blues David Holwell missed the first conversion but slotted the second and followed that up with a penalty.

The Lions came close to scoring their first try 5m out from the line with a rolling maul but the Blues gave away a penalty. The Lions correctly decided to go for the lineout and created the maul again.

The Blues tried to push the maul out so Pretorius booted the ball up behind the line where Ben Atiga fumbled the ball and the Lions pounced to score the try.

Pretorius converted and the Lions look like they could be back in the game.

The Blues fired straight back running the ball to the line and driving over the line but the TV ref (correctly) saw that the ball was not grounded and did not award the try.

A scrum was awarded but the Lions tried to clear and failed allowing the Blues to attack. Scrambling defence saves the Lions day for now.

When the Blues have the ball they look very dangerous.

The Blues turn the ball over midfield and as they have a huge overlap they swing the ball to Howlett who hardly has to break into a sweat and scores the try. Holwell misses the conversion.

Again the Blues create the overlap and this time they have three open but Ben Atiga is the lucky one this time so he scores the try.

Hollwell hits post and as it all going well for the Blues the ball goes in off the posts. That’s the bonus point for the Blues in half an hour.

Just before half time there is a bit of handbags on the field (Howlett and Rose) and Januarie comes in late so he gives away a penalty and Blues maul it towards the line. The TV ref has a busy night and decides that Daniel Braidscored a try. An interesting decision because the ball was in no way visible. NZ TV commentators are even questioning the decision.

Holwell converts and it’s half time.

The half time scorewas Blues34 Lions 7.

The Lions came out from half time looking a little more stable at first but failed to score any points in the first minutes. The forwards are not doing too bad but the handling errors are popping into the Lions game and costing them dearly at crucial times.

While the Lions have (for now) stopped the tries coming in they are defending better and they are attacking more but the Blues defence is holding strong.

The second half is vastly different from the 1st half with lots of ball in the forwards and energy sapping stuff.

The Blues however manage to wake the crowd up with a yet another overlap and Doug Howlett although it has to be said that there was a forward pass in there.

Holwell converts to add to the Lions pain. The Lions however got the last points on offer in the match as the rolling maul rolls forward Ethienne Reynecke breaks away to score the try.
