Sale Sharks come good against London Wasps

Sale Sharks did their hopes of staying in the Premiership the world of good on Friday when they beat London Wasps by 19 points to 8 at Edgeley Park.

Both teams scored one try a piece but London Wasps discipline let them down and Charlie Hodgson and Richard Wigglesworth kicked four penalties which made the difference.

Charlie Hodgson’s reliable boot put the hosts in front in the opening half as he slotted three unanswered penalties to give the Sharks a 9-0 lead at the break.

Wasps sprung to life 11 minutes into the second period, scoring their first points of the clash and closing the gap to four points thanks to centre Ben Jacobs’ try.

However, the five-pointer was negated only two minutes later as scrum-half Richard Wigglesworth scored the home side’s opening try before Hodgson made it 16-5.

Wasps substitute Danny Cipriani, who came on for Dave Walder at the break, reduced the lead to eight points with a penalty in the 55th minute, but Sale’s crucial win was secured with a late three-pointer from Wigglesworth.

The win sees Sale leap-frog Worcester and Leeds Carnegie to move into 10th place on the Premiership table.
