Saints to meet Gloucester in LV=Cup final

Northampton progressed past the semi-final of the LV= Cup with a 31-20 victory over Saracens on Sunday, and will face Gloucester in the final.

Derick Hougaard stuck Sarries ahead in the early stages when an offside from Northampton handed them a penalty. But the Saints quickly responded with a try from Phil Dowson, after he took the ball at pace from three metres out. Shane Geraghty’s subsequent attempt to convert was denied by the upright.

Hougaard stuck away his second penalty on the 15-minute mark when he successfully kicked through the posts from 35 metres, and he added another two before the break. Geraghty kicked three penalties for Northampton to put the score at 14-12 by the interval.

In the second half Brian Mujati took it over the line for the Saints at the corner, with Sarries a man short as Richard Skuse was sent to the sin bin on the stroke of half time.

The Saints grabbed another try on the 50-minute mark when a gap in midfield saw Chris Ashton release Paul Diggin to score, and the hosts went up 24-12.

Glen Jackson, who replaced Hougaard, then stuck one through the posts to reduce the arrears, but Neil Best added a try which Geraghty converted for the hosts.

Saracens scored their only try of the match through Justin Melck in the 75th minute to put the scores on 31-20, but it was too late for the visitors and Northampton advanced with the win.
