IRB to fund Argentina’s entry into TriNations

Argentina will join the Southern Hemisphere’s TriNations rugby tournament the year after the Rugby World Cup which is 2012.

SANZAR invited Argentina to join the TriNations after pressure from the IRB but the invitation had a number of conditions.

South Africa, New Zealand and Australia Rugby responded to IRB pressure by telling the games ruling body to put their money where their mouth is and sources have told the Australian that the IRB are poised to fund the Pumas’ entry into the tournament.

Later this month, an IRB executive meeting is expected to set aside about $2.2 million to underwrite the Pumas’ TriNations or should that be Four Nations campaign.

IRB chief executive Mike Miller would not comment on the development when he visited New Zealand during the week.

He did however confirm that an announcement was imminent, and that it would be a historic day for Argentinian rugby.
