S14 – Week 5 – Stats

This was the week that turned the Super 14 on its head, emphasising for us that sporting prediction is not an exact science and that the surprising is still the great spice of sport.

The winless Chiefs were unlucky to draw with the Cheetahs, and then the weekend went haywire. The Stormers, last on the Super 14, beat the Hurricanes of New Zealand in New Zealand and they were placed second. The Bulls did what they have never done in beating the Brumbies in Canberra – coming second in possession, which was historically unusual, and tackling like demons, which was also unusual in recent history. Then in Brisbane the Lions, expected to be the Super 14’s whipping boys, beat the Reds, their fourth successive win in the Super 14.

It was all topsy turvy.

We shall discuss some interesting incidents later but here we shall give some statistics around possession.

Soundsure have been a huge help with much of the statistics, as they always are.

“Stoppages” is the total of penalties, free kicks, line-outs, scrums and their infernal resets, and drop-outs.

All 14 teams were in action this weekend after byes to the Sharks and the Waratahs last weekend.
