Racing Metro upset London Wasps

London Wasps were upset in France on Thursday evening when they lost 19-17 to Racing Metro in the Amlin European Challenge Cup.

The London based team looked to be on track to win the match but Racing Metro’s kicker Jonathan Wisniewski kicked an injury time penalty to snatch victory from the visitors who had led at half time.

A brace of tries from Tom Varndell and seven points from Danny Cipriani’s boot had Wasps leading 17-16 when referee James Jones blew for the Racing Metro penalty.

Wasps will now have to wait to find out if the loss has cost them a home quarter-final in the European Challenge Cup.

Going into the match Wasps were unbeaten in the Amlin European Challenge Cup and victory in France would have ensured that they would have finished at the top of pool four and that would have sealed a home quarter-final.

However Wasps could now be overtaken by Connacht who could snatch the top spot with victory at Olympus Rugby in Madrid.

Essentially Wasps indiscipline cost them the match as Dan Ward-Smith spent time in the bin and a penalty try was awarded against them. The final blow was the penalty at the end.

Wasps got off to an almost perfect start when after 12 minutes Varndell had scored a try and Danny Cipriani had nailed a conversion and a penalty the visitors were leading 10-3.

Cipriani missed two further penalties but Wisniewski kicked a penalty and then nailed a long-range drop goal. Wasps were still leading at half time but Racing Metro were only a point behind at 9-10.

Dan Ward-Smith was shown a yellow card in the 5th minute for killing the ball and referee James Jones was forced to award a penalty try for Racing Metro after some sustained pressure and the home side taking control of the scrum.

With a man down however Cipriani set up Varndell’s second try with a long and brave pass and the match result looked to be sealed in Wasps favour.

In injury time the whistle went for a penalty after a high tackle on Wisniewski who got up and banged the penalty over to break London Wasps hearts.
