Newcastle Falcons beat Albi

Newcastle Falcons got themselves one win away from the last eight of the Challenge Cup after a narrow 14-16 victory over French side Albi on Friday night.

The match was tight throughout and after Blair Stewart Jimmy Gopperth had both kicked two penalties each the teams were level at 6-all at half time.

Albi took the lead shortly after the break with a try from Yogane Correa. Gopperth added a third penalty and then Stewart added his third which kept Albi in the lead.

Then with seven minutes to go Josh Afu scored the Falcons only try and Gopperth converted securing a very close pool 5 victory for the men from Newcastle (and New Zealand).

If the Falcons beat Italian side Petrarca at Kingston Park next weekend they should be guaranteed a place in the last eight of the European Challenge Cup for the fifth year in a row.
