Lynagh calls for Lawes England call up

Michael Lynagh has called for the uncapped Northampton Saints lock Courtney Lawes to be named in England’s 22-man squad to face Australia on Saturday.

Somewhat strangely given the England face Australia and Lynagh is an Australian, Lynagh that believes that Lawes’s elevation due to the injury crisis that has robbed Johnson of at least 14 players will prove to be a major positive for England.

Lynagh was a big part of Australia’s Grand Slam-winning side in 1984 and won 72 caps for the Wallabies. Australia will attempt to match the success of that tour in November as they are on a Grand Slam tour this year.

“Youngsters such as Courtney Lawes are going to have a big influence on English rugby over the next decade,” Lynagh told the Telegraph.

“The injuries may force him to come in a little bit earlier but that could be a good thing for English rugby.” said the Sky Sports commentator.

“Courtney is certainly on form for Northampton.”

“He is a dangerous sort of specimen, so why not let him loose?”

Lynagh added that he felt that as Johnson has been in charge for a year he is now under pressure to deliver.

“Martin has got to get a win or it will be a tough autumn for England,” he added.
