Strauss to captain Cheetahs in Currie Cup final

Former Springbok hooker Adriaan Strauss will captain the Free State Cheetahs in Saturday’s Currie Cup final against the Blue Bulls at Loftus Versfeld.

Strauss takes over the captaincy from lock Nico Breedt.

Two other Springboks in flanker Hendro Scholtz and wing Jongi Nokwe have not made the 22-man squad.

Strauss takes over the captaincy from lock Nico Breedt and his inclusion forces his cousin, Richardt Strauss, who stood in for him during his lay-off with a broken thumb, to the bench.

Strauss was named captain after injuries sidelined more senior captains Juan Smith, Hendro Scholtz and Meyer Bosman.

Under Strauss’ captaincy the Cheetahs recovered from a poor start of four losses in their first four fixtures to record six consecutive wins.

Nokwe, recovered from a hamstring injury, was replaced shortly before the semi-final against the Sharks by Danwel Demas, who retains his place.

Fabian Juries has been preferred as replacement to Nokwe. Scholtz makes way on the bench for Richardt Strauss.

The Cheetahs went into the semi-final against the Sharks without a specialist hooker replacement – a selection which nearly cost them as Ashley Johnson had to take over in the middle of the scrum when Richardt Strauss was injured.
