Harlequins hold out Worcester Warriors

Worcester Warriors executed a good comeback against Harlequins on Saturday but Willie Walker’s heroic efforts were not enough to prevent the London side from recording a 26-22 win.

Quins made the most of the opening minutes and attacked with intent. Nick Evans missed a penalty in the third minute but made up for it five minutes later when he converted Danny Care’s try to give his side a 7-0 lead.

Warriors pulled three points back in the 10th minute when Walker slotted a penalty, but Evans bagged one of his own moments later to make it 10-3.

Evans had a chance to extend their lead in the 23rd minute but missed the penalty attempt. Walker took advantage of that by slotting his second penalty a few minutes later to reduce the score to 10-6.

Walker could have reduced the deficit to just one point in the 32nd minute, but he missed the penalty. He made up for it on the half time whistle with a drop goal, before which Evans kicked another penalty. They went into the break on 13-9 to Quins.

Walker kicked another penalty soon after the restart to make it 13-12 and increase the tension. Evans could have given Quins some breathing room but he missed a penalty in the 48th minute.

Quins put on a burst of pace just past the hour when Rory Clegg added another penalty before converting Mike Brown’s 60th-minute try.

This took the score to 23-12.

Walker’s good form with the boot continued in the 70th minute when he kicked another penalty, but his efforts were not enough to prevent a loss as Clegg also added another penalty in the 74th minute.

Warriors were able to rescue a bonus point though as Callum Black scored a try right on full time, which Walker converted to make it 26-22, a critical gap of less than seven points.
