Watson would only play for Province in SA

Luke Watson who will shortly leave South Africa to play for Bath in the English Premiership says that if he returns to South Africa he would only play for Western Province (and therefore the Stormers).

Watson will join Bath from November the 1st on a two year contract after he played in his last match for Western Province who were knocked out of the Currie Cup as a result of their 21-19 semi-final defeat to the Blue Bulls at Newlands.

After the semi-final match he completed a lap of honour with the team and admitted that he had become emotional during the match. Even though his team missed out on reaching the Currie Cup semi-final he says that he had still experienced a fitting send-off.

“The boys showed so much guts and so much character. I sat in the change room and looked at a team of underdogs,” he told the Cape Times.

“I don’t think a single person thought that we would be in with a shout, except for the players and management,” he said.

“It’s an emotional time for me but, at the same time, I couldn’t ask for more.”

“We went down to the wire to a team that won the Super 14 by 50 points in the final – and they beat the British and Irish Lions and won the TriNations.

“Obviously in an ideal world, I’d like to be in the final. But to play at home in front of 50 000 people, to play in the blue-and-white-hoops for the last time and put up a performance like that is awesome. “

“It was a great last game.”

Watson said that he didn’t want to look too far into his future but that even though he moved to WP at the end of 2004 from the Sharks he would only play for WP if the opportunity arose and described his stay in the Cape as “brilliant”.

“I don’t know if I will come back. I can’t look to far into the future. But it has been a fantastic ride for me. I have kept you very busy on some weekends writing about me!

“I would just like to thank Western Province for five absolutely brilliant, fantastic years,” he said.

“I don’t know, if I had to come back, there is only one team that I would come back to. “

“They can offer me all the money in the world to go anywhere else in the country, but there is only one place that I would come back to.

“Thank you to everyone, thank you to Newlands, it has been fantastic and I hope that this is not the last you see of me!”
