Thomas makes short trip to Bristol

Bristol have stayed in the West Country for their latest recruitment swoop for next season with the signing of scrum half Haydn Thomas from Gloucester.

Thomas is currently in his second season at Gloucester having joined the Guinness Premiership side from Exeter Chiefs in the summer of 2005. He has made 14 starts to date for the Kingsholm Club scoring three tries.

It’s a case of second time lucky for Head Coach Richard Hill who was interested in bringing Thomas to the Memorial Stadium before he signed for Gloucester having coached him in the England Students set up.

Now Hill has finally got his man and is more than happy with his scrum half line up for the 2006-7 season as he explained today.

“I know Haydn well from having coached him in the England Students squad a couple of seasons back and, of course, he played against us for Exeter when we played in Division One.”

“I did make an effort to persuade him to join us when we got promoted and I’m delighted that he’s said yes – at last!”

“We need strength in depth at the number nine position given that we could well be missing Shaun Perry on World Cup duty next season. With Haydn and Brian O’Riordan, we will have two young scrum halves who both possess plenty of Premiership experience.”

“He has a good pass and is quick and strong, capable of making breaks. He’ll be a good signing for us.”

Thomas will join Bristol Rugby in time for preseason training and has signed a two year contract.
