Ospreys win but Phillips could pay the price

British and Irish Lions number 9 Mike Phillips could be in doubt for Wales’ autumn Tests after he hobbled off in the Ospreys Round 2 clash at the Liberty stadium against Clermont.

The Ospreys, like last weekend, started strongly but then let the opposition come back at them but this time they hung on for victory.

While the Ospreys were pleased with getting a victory losing Phillips is a big worry.

“We are not sure if it is a bone or ligament injury,” Ospreys coach Sean Holley told the BBC about Phillips who will will have a scan on Monday on his ankle injury.

If the news is bad Wales coach will have to add Phillips to an injury list that already includes Lee Byrne (foot ligament) and Adam Jones (shoulder).

Wales start their November international campaign against New Zealand on Saturday, 7 November.

That is the first of a four-test series that also include Tests with Samoa, Argentina and Australia.

Phillips was last week named in the Barbarians squad to face the All Blacks on 5 December.

“It’s too early to say [if Phillips will miss out],” added Holley.

“He tried to carry on and clearly it wasn’t responding so we will have to wait and see.”
