Tough three weeks ahead for SWD Eagles

Three tough weeks await the South Western District Eagles rugby side.

The George based outfit face the Pumas on Friday evening in the First Division final at Witbank before they challenge the Leopards in the first of two promotion/relegation matches at Potchefstroom.

“Our next two matches are away from home. It’s nerve-racking, but we are ready,” the Eagles president Stag Cronjé said.

“We had a good win against the Griffons last Friday and are now ready to take a step up. Of course we know it is not going to be easy, but we are desperate to win both. Now is our chance. We can’t let it slip through our fingers,” he added.

A week later – on November 6 – the Eagles meet the Leopards at Outeniqua Park. Cronje also said: “We aim to qualify for the Currie Cup next season.

“That is why we are calling for a huge effort from our players now. The time has come to perform.”

Meanwhile, coach Johann Lerm has a headache or two before he announces his side to face the Pumas.

Flyhalf Ricardo Croy and Samoan hooker Junior Leota were both brilliant in the win against the Griffons, but Lerm could be tempted to re-introduce Gaffie du Toit and Wayne Bennett in his starting line-up. And that is not the end of Lerm’s nightmare.

Towering lock Giant Mtyanda also had an outstanding game against the Griffons, but with first-choice Wikus Liebenberg fit and ready for selection, Mtyanda might also find himself on the bench again.

On the positive side all Lerm’s players seems to be in top form now. He will announce his team on Wednesday.
