Pumas into first division Currie Cup final

Witbank’s Coal Miners are back in production as the local Pumas side advanced to the First Division final by beating the Mighty Elephants 31-8 in South Eastern Transvaal’s coal capital on Friday evening.

The Pumas secured the victory with Elephants’ captain De Wet Barry in the sin bin for a dangerous tackle when scrumhalf Jacques Coetzee sniped over with less than 15 minutes to go.

The Pumas never looked back and extended their lead when the competition’s top-scorer Allister Ketteldas countered after a nothing kick up field and number eight Doppies le Roux finished off.

It was game, set and match when Le Roux crashed over after superb handling by reserve tighthead Dee-Jay Terblanche.

The home-side had the better of the early exchanges and dominated the forward play with Ronnie Uys destroying the Eastern Province scrum and Torsten van Jaarsveld and Corné Steenkamp ruling the ball on the ground.

Braam Pretorius’ pin-point boot got the Pumas on the board before Warren Whitely scored against the run of play to put his side in the lead. The Pumas quickly struck back when captain Hannes Franklin finished off a drive from a lineout five yards out.

The Pumas went into the break with a 16-10 lead but the Elephants didn’t come to Witbank to raise the white flag and captain Barry put his team into an unexpected lead when he charged down a kick from Coetzee.

Coetzee made amends later with Barry in the bin and the Pumas will host the final next weekend.
