Valke select their best for Border

The Valke have selected their best player, centre Franco Booysen, at flyhalf in an effort to salvage something from their dreadful season when they meet the Border Bulldogs in East London’s the Sisa Dukashe Stadium on Saturday.

Booysen has played in the number 10 jersey for the Leopards at junior level but has played most of his rugby in the midfield during the last two seasons.

The son of the former eastern Transvaal frontranker, Frans Booysen, is one of a few Valke players who can compete at this level.

This game against the Bulldogs will conclude a sorry chapter in the Valke’s proud history.

Flanker Reg Muller and captain Bovril de Bruin are two other members of the team who gave their best, but very few of the other players are capable of playing rugby at this level or, it is fair to say, to even compete at top club or top amateur rugby level.

To concede 71 tries in nine games at virtually eight per game is a further blemish on their record.
