Western Province make eight changes

The Western Province selectors have made eight changes to their side to play neighbours Boland in a Currie Cup derby at Newlands on Saturday.

Most of the changes were expected however as the coach Allister Coetzer decided earlier this week that several players who seen regular action since the start of the year should be rested.

The most interesting inclusion is that of the former Australian Schoolboys flyhalf Matt Toomua who joined the Province last week on a short-tern contract.

He was let loose in the second half against Griquas and he made a good impression.

Coetzee said he expected some rustiness at the start of the match because several players have been on the sidelines in recent weeks for a variety of reasons.

The coach also explained that the players who have been rested need to stay fresh for the team’s remaining games which will in all likelihood include a semi-final clash.

A notable inclusion in the side is that of Springbok lock Andries Bekker who has been nursing an injury over the past five weeks.

The regular Province halfback pairing of Peter Grant (flyhalf) and Dewaldt Duvenhage (scrumhalf) have been completely rested and will not even occupy a place on the bench.

Western Province team:

Joe Pietersen, Tonderai Chavhanga, Frikkie Welsh, Paul Bosch, Sireli Naqelevuki, Matt Toomua, Ricky Januarie, Luke Watson (captain), Pieter Louw, Francois Louw, Andries Bekker, De Kock Steenkamp, JC Kritzinger, Tiaan Liebenberg and JD Moller.

Reserves: Deon Fourie, Brok Harris, Anton van Zyl, Duane Vermeulen, Bolla Conradie, Conrad Hoffmann and Juan de Jongh.
