Sale Sharks get bitten by Worcester’s Warriors

Worcester Warriors held on to a narrow lead as they beat Sale Sharks 24-18 at Sixways Stadium on Saturday.

The hosts surged ahead in the opening 10 minutes as Willie Walker converted a drop-goal before the lead was extended to 10 points with a Marcel Garvey try and a Walker conversion.

Sharks closed the gap to two points shortly afterwards thanks to Lee Thomas’ successful penalty and a timely try from Chris Bell.

Walker kept the scoreboard ticking by converting two penalties as the Warriors went into the break at 16-8.

Worcester made a lightning start to the second half as Miles Benjamin made his way over the try-line two minutes after the restart, leaving Sale with the tough task of overcoming a 13-point deficit.

The home side did well to keep Sale out for the majority of the second half, but the Sharks ignited hope of a victory in the 65th minute as Mathew Tait scored before Richard Wigglesworth converted to put them within a converted try of victory.

However, a crucial penalty-kick from Walker made it more difficult as he opened Worcester’s lead to nine points four minutes later.

Thomas sneaked over a drop-goal before the end, but Warriors held on for the win to move into sixth on the Premiership standings.
