Province call up for Brumby Toomua

The 19-year-old Brumbies flyhalf Matt Toomua was a surprise inclusion in the Western Province Currie Cup team to face Griquas at Newlands on Saturday (kick-off 3pm).

Province have signed Toomua for the rest of the season as cover for Peter Grant who has barely enjoyed a break since the start of the year when he played Super 14 Rugby.

Even at the tender age of 19, Toomua has already played for the Brumbies in nine Super 14 matches, five of which he started out in the run-on XV.

Toomua will arrive in Cape Town on Thursday.

Province’s second-string flyhalf Conrad Hoffmann has been sent to play club rugby for the Maties, in an effort to expose him to flyhalf play after it was decided to use him at No 10 instead of scrumhalf following the injury to Willem de Waal.
