Watson leads Province to Leopards victory

Potchefstroom’s main road through town on the way to Cape Town could aptly be renamed Luke Watson Drive after the Western Province captain set up his team’s 3-37 victory over the Leopards on Friday night.

Watson scored two vital tries in the second half, tailing behind the Western Province drives, and set up a third in similar fashion for centre Juan de Jongh.

Province scored five tries, three as a result of their forward drives and two by their quick backs Joe Pietersen and Gio Aplon, but the Leopards deserve much more credit than their single penalty goal might indicate.

While Province were in the driving seat, they never played the cavalier rugby for which they are known. It was the Leopards who ran the ball at their opponents, but they failed to capitalise on any opportunities.

Province had the skills and pace out wide but clearly weren’t prepared to risk a shock defeat at the hands of the minnows.

Leopards lock Ligtoring Landman, and flankers Wilhelm Koch and Thabo Mamojele were particularly impressive for the home side, mixing with the best Province could offer.

Final Score Leopards 3 Western Province 37

Tries: Luke Watson (2), Joe Pietersen, Juan de Jongh, Gio Aplon.
Conversions: Pietersen (3).
Penalties: Pietersen (2).

Penalty: Cecil Dumont.
