Province bring in Welsh flair to their backline

The strong-running Frikkie Welsh has been handed a run-on berth in the Western Province team that will come up against the Free State Cheetahs in Saturday’s Currie Cup clash in Bloemfontein.

Welsh has been warming the substitutes’ bench in recent weeks but the injury to inside centre Morgan Newman, has created an opening for him.

Province coach Allister Coetzee has moved regular outside centre Juan de Jongh closer to the action and the promising 21-year-old Wellington-born prodigy, should have little difficulty adjusting as he last played there during the 2006 Craven Week for Boland.

The young Matie Paul Bosch, has been called up to take Welsh’s place on the bench.

WP team:

Joe Pietersen, Tonderai Chavhanga, Frikkie Welsh, Juan de Jongh, Gio Aplon, Peter Grant, Dewaldt Duvenage, Luke Watson (captain), Duane Vermeulen, Francois Louw, Chris Jack, Anton van Zyl, Brock Harris, Deon Fourie and Wicus Blaauw.

Substitutes: Hanyani Shimange, JD Moller, De Kock Steenkamp, Pieter Louw, Conrad Hoffmann, Paul Bosch and JJ Engelbrecht.
