Griquas sent back to the drawing board

The Free State Cheetahs taught Griquas a rugby lesson on Saturday when they handed the former log leaders a 58-13 thumping in their Currie Cup clash in Kimberley.

The home side dominated territory and possession for the first 20 minutes before the Cheetahs ran rampant, climbing one place to fifth on the log. Griquas captain, Jonathan Mokuena was very disappointed and said it will be back to the drawing board for his team.

“We did not play very well, but the Cheetahs did the job and played good rugby, outclassing us in all facets of the game,” said the disappointed captain.

Free State Cheetahs captain, Adriaan Strauss, said it is always nice to win in Kimberley as they know that Griquas are always difficult to beat on their home ground. “I am very pleased with my players as they showed character and they played very well.”

Dawie Theron, Griqua’s coach was also very disappointed, citing that his players had not quite recovered from the Bulls match.

“Today the wheels just fell off. “I thought we had a good chance in the first 20 minutes of the match but then that’s when the wheels started to come off. The game plan was not stuck to, and it will be very difficult to re-focus, but the guys will bounce back,” said Theron.

Cheetahs coach, Naka Drotske, said he was extremely happy with the way his team performed. “We stuck to the basics and to our game plan, however, our lineouts in the beginning were not at all good, but they improved as the game progressed.”

Drotske said he was proud of his players as they keep improving with every game and are starting to regain their confidence after their early losses in the Currie Cup.
