Spice handed Bristol captaincy

New Zealand born Jason Spice has been confirmed as the club’s Playing Captain for the 2009/10 season.

Jason, a New Zealand born scrum half, joined the club this summer from Cardiff Blues where he achieved Heineken Cup  success, reaching the semi-finals in May 2009.

Born in Matamata, New Zealand, Jason has previously played for Auckland and Wellington, before moving to the UK to play for the Ospreys in 2004.

Whilst Roy Winters takes on the post as Club Captain and will have responsibility for off-field matters, Jason will take the reigns on the pitch, leading the team out on match days.

Commenting on the announcement of his captaincy, Spice said,”Its a huge honour to have been offered the position and I certainly didn’t think twice about accepting it. I’ve been at the club now since July and I’m committed to being a part of Bristol Rugby .

” It’s an exciting time for the club going into the new Championship.”

“I’m ready to take on the responsibility of a playing captain. It will be a big moment for me to run out at The Memorial Stadium for the first time this season and it’s one I’m relishing.”

Head Coach Paul Hull said,”Jason has all the attributes required of a playing captain. Whilst we considered other candidates extensively, ultimately the decision to appoint Jason is, we believe, the right one.”

“His experience in the sport, his professional attitude, and his own rugby abilities all contributed towards the decision.”

“He is very much a team player on and off the field. I’m sure both him and Roy will make very successful captains.”
