Lions get new President

Former Springbok lock and Transvaal rugby captain Kevin de Klerk on Monday night officially became the 19th president of the Golden Lions Rugby Union (GLRU) at an extraordinary general meeting of the union.

De Klerk was the only nominee after Neville Jardine had withdrawn from the race for president last week.

Jardine was an incumbent deputy president and the acting president after the resignation of Prof. Jannie Ferreira early in June. Manie Reyneke at the same time resigned his position as the one deputy president but stayed on as the union’s CEO.

De Klerk was nominated under the changed constitution which was accepted by the outgoing executive committee.

This was done to widen the net of nominees to stand for the exco by attracting experienced individuals who serve in the broader union on their relevant boards and the Trust.

De Klerk, who has been serving on both the Trust and the board, fit these requirements needed to run for president, a GLRU statement said last week.

De Klerk played 105 matches for the provincial side and 13 Tests for South Africa.

The two deputy presidents will be Jardine and Altmann Allers, who were also the only two nominees for the position after the withdrawal last week of Sampie Pienaar from the race for deputy president. Allers of Pirates Rugby Club is a newcomer to the executive committee.

The four vice-presidents elected are Steve Meintjes and Tony de Munnik, who were re-elected, Nico Swartz and Etienne Hoeksma. Swartz was a co-opted vice-president.

The election, which is traditionally held in November, was brought forward because of the resignations of Ferreira and Reyneke which left vacancies on the executive committee.
