Bath suffer Barkley blow

Olly Barkley has received a setback to his pre-season preparations having sustained a fractured leg yesterday.

The 27-year-old suffered a spiral fracture to his left fibula during a tackling drill when his foot got caught during the session at the Bath Rugby training camp in Portugal. Olly will be having an orthopaedic review on Monday.

However, most injuries of this nature do not require surgery.

Speaking this morning, Head Coach Steve Meehan believes there is no need to panic: “Obviously it has had an impact upon Olly’s pre-season, which is a real shame because he has been training so well, but from a team point of view we have every confidence that we will still have a strong start to the season.

“We have the likes of Shontayne Hape, Nicky Little, Ryan Davis, Tom Cheeseman and Matt Carraro who are all very capable in those positions, so there is no major drama.

“It is only a short-term injury.”
