De Jongh comes in for Western Province

The highly promising 21-year-old centre Juan de Jongh has been rewarded for his excellent form with a place in the Western Province run-on XV against the Cheetahs in Friday’s Currie Cup match at Newlands.

De Jongh has been impressive in the last two games when he entered the fray as a substitute and he has replaced Emerging Springbok Morgan Newman who moves out the the substitutes’ bench.

Joe Pietersen has still not recovered from his leg injury and Province coach Allister Coetzee has wisely retained Sevens Springbok Gio Aplon at fullback.

In the pack, flank Francois Louw makes a long-awaited return from injury and he has displaced Pieter Myburgh at the side of the scrum.


Winger Tonderai Chavhanga makes a return after an injury lay-off and new recruit Frikkie Welsh finds himself on the reserves bench.

The Western Province team to play the Cheetahs reads:

Gio Aplon; Tonderai Chavhanga, Juan de Jongh, Peter Grant, Sireli Naqelevuki; Willem de Waal, Dewaldt Duvenage; Luke Watson (captain), Pieter Louw, Francois Louw, Anton van Zyl, Chris Jack, Brock Harris, Tiaan Liebenberg and Wicus Blaauw.

Reserves: Deon Fourie, JD Moller, Hilton Lobberts, Pieter Myburgh, Conrad Hoffmann, Morgan Newman and Frikkie Welsh.
