Kevin de Klerk will be Lions President

Former Springbok lock Kevin de Klerk will be the next Golden Lions Rugby Union president.

De Klerk was the only nominee when nominations for the general meeting on July 27 closed on Monday.

He will succeed Prof Jannie Ferreira, who resigned early in June with the one deputy president Manie Reyneke, who remained on as CEO. The remaining deputy president, Neville Jardine, is the acting president.

Two deputy presidents and four vice-presidents also need to be elected as the four-year term of the whole executive committee has come to an end.

With the exception of Ferreira and Reyneke all the members of the present executive committee are available for re-election.

De Klerk’s nomination had to be specially approved by the present exco as he has not served the mandatory two years on the chairmen’s council as stipulated in the constitution.

His election will be conditional upon the changing of the constitution at the same meeting on July 27 to allow him to be elected.

There are three nominations for the two positions as deputy presidents.

They are incumbent Jardine, Altmann Allers of Pirates and present vice-president Sampie Pienaar from Alberton.

All three are available for the position as vice-president should they be the one not to be elected as deputy.

The other three current vice-presidents Margie Shackleford, Tony de Munnik, and SA referees boss Steve Meintjes plus the unsuccessful deputy president candidate will be opposed by Randfontein’s Ettiene Hoeksma, Harlequins’ Steve Prinsloo, Smiley Smith of Police and Nico Swartz, who is a co-opted vice-president.

It has been mooted that the four-year term of office, which currently applies, be changed back to two years.
