Bulldogs to face new look SWD Currie Cup side

The Border Bulldogs will face a new-look SWD Currie Cup  rugby side when they clash in the First Division in East London on Friday evening.

Coach Johann Lerm has brought in four of his five of his new signings.

Bevin Fortuin will start at inside centre, Gaffie du Toit at flyhalf, Jandré Blom at scrumhalf, Wikus Liebenberg at lock and Schalk van der Merwe at No 8.

Lerm’s other signing, Junior Leota, is still in Australia where he is battling to sort out his passport problems.

Du Toit has starred for Toulouse at fullback and wing, but Lerm believes he is too good a flyhalf not to wear the No 10 jersey.

Since his arrival at George, Du Toit has impressed with his huge kicking abillity and Lerm has decided immediately that he is not going to play him in any other position.

The SWD Rugby Union earlier indicated qualifying for next year’s Currie Cup competition is not negotiable, but Lerm said he will take it step by step.

“Playing the Bulldogs in East London is never easy and I expect them to be as tough as always – escpecially after their defeat against Eastern province over the weekend. “But I have confidence in my side and hopefully we will play to our true potensial.”

The SWD team is:

Bobby Joubert, Norman Nelson, Izak Saayman, Bevin Fortuin (capt), Baldwin McBean, Gaffie du Toit, Jandré Blom, Schalk van der Merwe, Denis Manuel, Victor Joubert, Henry Grimes, Wikus Liebenberg, Wikus Harmse, Wayne Bennett, Brood van der Westhuizen.

Replacements: Ashton Constant, Jaco Terblanche, Giant Mtyanda, Hein Potgieter, Warren Malgas, Jandré du Plessis, Jacques Engelbrecht.
