Super 15 bid could end Pacific Islands Alliance

Manu Samoa have been told that they can bid for the Southern Hemisphere’s 15th Super Rugby spot in the Super 15 from 2011 but it could spell the end of the Pacific Islands Alliance.

The Pacific Islands formed an alliance team that have toured as the Pacific Islands Rugby team but the Samoan Rugby Union has made it clear it wants to do away with the Pacific Islanders tours.

Samoa would prefer to play Tests on their own and say that is the best way for island nations to build their rugby union base.

PIRA chairman Keni Dakuidreketi yesterday confirmed Samoa had spoken about a possible withdrawal.

“The body that looks after the combined team is Pacific Rugby  Limited, on which the three unions are equal shareholders of,” Dakuidreketi told Fiji Online.

“Samoa has expressed its desire to disengage from the PRL.”

Dakuidreketi, the Fiji Rugby Union acting chief executive, said a decision would be made soon.

Samoa Rugby Union chief executive Peter Schuster referred all queries to Dakuidreketi but said earlier in the week that Samoan would not be able to get a professional team up in time making it unlikely that they will bid.

SANZAR (South Africa, New Zealand and Australia Rugby Unions) invited Samoa to bid for the 15th Super Rugby franchise but made no such offer to Fiji and Tonga for a place in the Super 15.

The Samoan Rugby Union has reportedly been provided with the expression of interest document so that it can consider whether it wishes to mount a bid.
