Boland could lose fastest winger ever

Boland winger Deon Scholtz, who was last year the fastest player ever tested by Sevens rugby coach Paul Treu, will have to pass a fitness test ahead of the Kavaliers’ Currie Cup match against the Sharks in Durban on Friday evening.

Scholtz injured a hip in their opening match against the Platinum Leopards at Wellington which Boland won 26-18. Boland coach, Deon Davids, said there is concern about Scholtz’s injury, but he is still hopeful the flyer would make the trip to Durban.

Centre Dewey Swartbooi had to receive stitches after a bad cut to his lip, but should, according to Davids, be fit for the match.

Lock Frikkie Spies, who played against the Leopards with a certain degree of flu, also seem to be raring to go.

If Sholtz is cleared to play, the indications are that Davids will stick to his starting line-up that played the Leopards off their feet in the first half. Although the Kavaliers did not perform as well after the interval, Davids said there is no need for concern.

“That is something we can put right. The main thing is that we stuck to our match plan to play in the Leopards’ half as long as possible. “It paid off. I am convinced my team will grow in stature,” Davids said.

Although they returned home with no points, the Leopards can at least say they scored three tries to Boland’s two.

But don’t write off the Potchefstroom side yet. Coach Chaka Willemse will certainly take his men back to the black board and could be a complete different outfit when they face Griquas in Kimberley next Saturday.
