Cheetahs and Griquas get good warm ups

The Free State Cheetahs and the GWK Griquas will be in buoyant mood ahead of the 2009 Currie Cup Premier Division competition following their compulsory friendly victories on Friday.

In Wellington, the Bloemfontein side ran in six tries to outclass their opponents at the Outeniqua Park, after leading the match 28-7 at the halftime break.

Andries Strauss, Louis Strydom, Meyer Bosman, Richardt Strauss, Johan Wessels and Lionel Mapoe were the try-scorers for the Free State Cheetahs with Jacques-Louis Potgieter(3) and Strydom (3) converting the tries.

For the SWD Eagles, fullback Bobby Joubert and new recruit Bevin Fortuin (former Cheetahs fullback), were the only players to cross the try line for the hosts.

“It’s never easy playing in Wellington, so we are very happy with our result against the Eagles,” said Naka Drotske, coach of the Cheetahs.

“As I have said before, there will not be any easy games in this year’s Currie Cup, so we are happy to continue building momentum ahead of the competition.”

In Kempton Park, at the Barnard Stadium, Griquas were too strong for the Valke and ran in 11 tries to comprehensively defeat the hosts 67-20 on Friday afternoon. Dewald Pretorius was the star of the match and crossed the try line on five occasions.

Brendon Snyman also scored a brace of tries with Albertus Buckle, Trompie Nontshinga, Sean Plaatjies and Gavin Passens each scoring tries.

The Valke though played some enterprising rugby and managed to score three tries thanks to Ederies Arense, Velly Radebe and Tango Gatya.

Flyhalf Petri Kunz kicked a penalty and converted one try for the hosts who will be competing in this season’s Currie Cup First Division competition.

“I am very happy with the victory considering that a lot of our first choice players were out due to injury,” said Dawie Theron, coach Griquas.

“This was our only warm-up game ahead of the Currie Cup, so we will take a lot of heart from this performance and hopefully build on this going into the competition.

“I believe we will have sufficient depth this year, so it’s going to be interesting to see how the guys play.”
