Luus moves to Lions for Currie Cup

Valke lock Nico Luus will be a Lion for the rest of the year including the Currie Cup.

Luus started training with the Lions on Wednesday after he negotiated a deal with the Golden Lions which will see him in red and white in the Currie Cup until the end of October.

It is the first time in the 32-year-old’s career that he will don a jersey other than the Valke one he usually wears.

The departure of Anton van Zyl to Western Province and Dewald Senekal, who is overseas, as well as injuries to both Lions locks Gerhard Mostert and Jannes Labuschagne, prompted the Lions to look at Luus.

Luus, the veteran Willem Stoltz, ex-Boland player Bradley Mockford and the young Rob Andrew are currently the locks in the squad.

New recruits at the Lions include Luus, ex Blue Bull prop Kevin Buys, Ikey centre Piet Engelbrecht and Bulls centre/wing/fullback Johan Jackson. Luus captained the Valke in the Vodacom Cup this year.
