As expected, it was one-way traffic for Western Province in their Currie Cup friendly rugby match against Eastern Province at the Crusaders ground in St George’s Park on Saturday afternoon.
WP ran in ten excellent tries to register a runaway 72-10 victory after leading 27-3 at half-time It took the visitors some time to settled down and EP provided spirited opposition throughout the first half.
However, it was all Western Province in the second half as they ran EP ragged. Scrumhalf Conrad Hoffman led the try-scoring spree with three, while Springbok wing Tonderai Chavanhage and flank Zandre Jordaan each added two.
Replacement flank Jody Burch also weighed in with two tries, while another replacement Juan de Jongh completed the scoring when he went over for the final try of the match.
Flyhalf Jurgen Visser certainly had his kicking boots on and failed with only one attempt throughout the 80 minutes. He contributed 22 points with the boot via two penalties and eight conversions.
Though EP tried hard throughout, they were simply outclassed. Their only try of the match came late in the second half when their hard-working lock Trichardt Van Tonder crossed over for replacement flyhalf Deon Booysen to convert.
Flyhalf Ryan Brown succeeded with a penalty in the first half. WP coach Allister Coetzee was pleased with his team’s performance.
“We brought a young side to PE and most of the players put up their hands and this augurs well for the upcoming Currie Cup season,” he said at the conclusion of the match.
