Smith to captain CA Brumbies

CA Brumbies flanker George Smith has been selected to lead the CA Brumbies in their Investec Super 14 Week Four match against the Hurricanes in Wellington.

The 84-cap veteran will lead the side after captain Stirling Mortlock and vice captain Alister Campbell were ruled out due to injury.

Mortlock will miss Friday’s match still suffering neck soreness and a bruised jaw, a result of a high tackle from Reds centre Lloyd Johansson in the CA Brumbies’ 6-3 in Brisbane last weekend. Campbell has also been rested to recover from a foot injury.

Smith, who captained Australia A on the recent Wallaby Spring Tour, says he is proud to become the seventh player to lead the CA Brumbies.

“It’s a great honour to captain a side that has such a tradition of producing excellent leaders,” he said. “We already have the Wallabies’, [Australian Under] 21’s and [Australian Under] 19’s captains in the Brumbies’ squad at the moment.

“I’m also fortunate to have a lot of very experienced players alongside me like George [Gregan], Bernie [Stephen Larkham] and JP [Jeremy Paul], so I’m really looking forward to it.”

CA Brumbies head coach Laurie Fisher says Smith was a leading candidate for the captaincy.

“It’s a tremendous opportunity for George,” he said. “He’s been a part of our leadership group this year and he’s captained Australia A, so he’s a player that we know has excellent leadership qualities. He’s very much a lead-by-example style player and we’ve got every confidence that he’ll do a good job of leading the side on Friday.”

The CA Brumbies side to play the Hurricanes will be announced on Thursday.
