Azam gets nine week ban for eye gouging

Gloucester’s French hooker Olivier Azam will miss the start of next season after being hit with a nine-week ban for gouging.

The forward will be eligible to play again on September 18 after being found guilty of making making contact with the eyes or eye area of Cardiff Blues player Jamie Roberts during the Anglo-Welsh Cup final on April 18, which the Welsh side won 50-12.

Azam thought he had escaped punishment over the incident last month when a disciplinary panel ruled that the citing had been submitted too late for the charges to be considered.

But that decision was overturned following a review by the Rugby Football Union and a fresh hearing arranged.
