Young praises Cardiff’s possible Blue Lions

Cardiff director of rugby Dai Young praised his team after winning the EDF Energy Cup at the home of English Rugby saying how sure he was that a number of his squad would make the Lions tour to South Africa.

Leigh Halfpenny and Ben Blair scored a brace of tries each while Tom James, Ceri Sweeney and Tom Shanklin also crossed the line and an outclassed Gloucester were put to the sword at 12 points to 50.

“We didn’t think we’d score 50 points against a team like Gloucester. I’m very proud of the effort and the skills,” he told EDF Energy Cup.

“It’s been a long journey at the Blues because of the restrictions in place. We had to work with the younger players.

“We had to make sure everything was right with recruitment and today the seasoned internationals really stood up and led us.

“It’s been a lot of hard graft but days like today make it worthwhile. The players were determined to make sure they came here and achieved something because they deserved it.”

On Friday Lions coach Ian McGeechan said that all of the places had not been booked so Cardiff’s Lions contingent must have strengthened their claims to join the summer tour to South Africa with the emphatic result.

The British and Irish Lions squad is announced on Tuesday afternoon and Young said that he was sure a number of his players would be called up.

“Tom Shanklin, Martyn Williams and Gethin Jenkins are dead certs,” said Young.

“Jamie Roberts has put his hand up and Leigh Halfpenny will be there or thereabouts.

“That’s reward for what the players have done for us and with Wales.

“As a region we’re proud to supply players to Wales and to have some guys on the Lions tour is further reward.”
