London Irish romp to six try Bristol victory

London Irish produced a superb display on Saturday to beat relegation-doomed Bristol 38-21 at the Madejski Stadium, running in six tries.

Nick Kennedy and Adam Thompstone each bagged a brace for the Exiles, while Bristol scored three tries. Steffon Armitage and Paul Hodgson got the other two tries for the home side.

Tom Homer gave the Exiles the early advantage when he slotted a penalty in the seventh minute, which would have been a relief as Christopher Halaufia had been sent to the sin bin minutes before.

Bristol were the ones to get the first try though, when Scott Linklater went over in the 18th minute. Tom Arscott converted to give the struggling side the lead.

It was a temporary joy though, as Kennedy’s try in the 31st minute gave Irish the lead again. Homer missed the conversion so the gap was a single point but it became four when he kicked a penalty in the 35th minute to make it 11-7.

Irish went into the break on a high thanks to a try by Steffon Armitage in the 37th minute, which Homer failed to convert. It still left them with a handy nine-point gap though.

The scoring rate increased rapidly after the interval, with Kennedy getting his second try in the 47th minute. Delon Armitage missed the conversion. David Lemi then got Bristol’s second try in the 50th minute, and Arscott kicked the extras.

Thompstone got the bonus point secured for the home side with a try in the 53rd minute, but again the conversion went abegging to leave the score on 26-14.

Hodgson added his name to the score board in the 71st minute when he crossed the try line, and Delon Armitage finally got a conversion on the books for Irish to make it 33-14.

Thompstone bagged his brace a few minutes from time, though Armitage again missed the conversion, before Luke Eves got a consolation try for the visitors just as the whistle was about to sound. Arscott converted the effort to bring respectability to the score line.
