Cheeky Watson not in charge of SA’s new Super Rugby team

There has been some confusion around press reports regarding the leadership of the bid to establish a Super Rugby franchise in the Eastern Cape.

The South African Rugby Union (Saru) has confirmed that the interim steering committee, established to guide the process, is led by Saru deputy president, Mark Alexander with Eastern Province identified as the anchor province to lead the new franchise.

“The Eastern Cape and Saru are working closely with local government on the project and Director of Sport in the Eastern Cape, Bafundi Makubalo has been appointed to oversee the co-ordination of local government’s support,” said Mr Oregan Hoskins, the president of Saru.
