Falcons reach England player compromise

Newcastle Falcons have confirmed that fly half Jonny Wilkinson will play no part in Sunday’s Guinness Premiership trip to Bristol

Wilkinson will therefore be rested according to Brian Ashton’s wishes ahead of England’s game against Ireland the weekend after.

Wilkinson was named is Brian Ashton’s England team for the trip to Dublin on Monday, and former Newcastle Director of Rugby Rob Andrew is currently involved in persuading Premiership coaches to rest the England players selected in Ashton’s starting XV.

“We believe this is a decision in the best interests of the club and the player,” said current Newcastle coach John Fletcher on Monday, after confirming Wilkinson would be rested.

“Jonny has started two tough international matches, taken a lot of bumps and bruises, and we have reached a joint decision.

“We are in the fortunate position of having two England fly-halves at the club, and both Toby Flood and Mathew Tait will be involved down at Bristol.

“Each player has been taken case by case based on what is best, and for Toby and Mathew we believe playing for their club down at Bristol is the appropriate course of action to take.”

Fletcher will name his team to face Bristol on Thursday. Tait and Flood have been named on Ashton’s bench for the trip to Dublin.
